Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. The aunt she had was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to literature, theatre, and art. DuVernay became enamored with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay resided in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. While she was still studying, DuVernay began to consider producing for television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury as well as examine their junk. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in small production studios right out of high school. The year 1999 was the time she established her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency.
